Kazakhstan has joined the UN’s global information campaign promoting safe behaviour on the roads and aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents, Orda.kz reports.
Since April 3, the campaign’s outdoor materials have been displayed on advertising boards in Astana and Almaty. The organization called on decision-makers and opinion leaders to make clear personal commitments to improving road safety.
Road traffic accidents are a silent pandemic across the world, and in Kazakhstan they still claim more than 2,000 lives every year, affecting families and communities throughout the country. Despite the progress made, lower mortality rates and stricter seat belt requirements, problems such as speeding and drink-driving remain. As mobility increases, sustained efforts are needed to ensure the safety of all road users. said Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety.
The project, launched under the hashtag #MakeASafetyStatement, was supported by many well-known figures from sport, cinema and music, including Novak Djokovic, Jean Reno, Michael Fassbender, Michelle Yeoh, Didier Drogba, Patrick Dempsey, Charles Leclerc, Marc Marquez, Kylie Minogue and Youssou N’Dour.
The UN noted that around 1.19 million people die in road accidents worldwide every year. In Kazakhstan, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, 36,146 traffic accidents were registered in 2025, 1,796 of them fatal.
