Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom will work together on rare earth metals after the Senate approved the law on ratifying the Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Orda.kz reports.
According to deputy Alisher Satvaldiyev, the law strengthens cooperation in the economy, energy, technology, education and other areas.
The agreement sets out the basic principles of political, economic, legal and humanitarian cooperation and will bring Kazakh-British relations to a new level. It opens up opportunities to attract investment, expand trade and implement joint projects in priority sectors. he said.
The deputy added that the UK is already among the largest investors in Kazakhstan.
The United Kingdom has invested more than $23 billion in Kazakhstan’s economy. Ratification of the agreement will strengthen the country’s reputation as a reliable partner with a predictable legal environment. For the regions, this means an inflow of capital and the possibility of direct cooperation with British companies and universities. Satvaldiyev said.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arman Isetov added that the agreement moves relations with the UK from political dialogue to practical cooperation.
After the foreign minister’s visit to London, the parties signed a roadmap on rare earth metals and agreements on university cooperation. In general, ratification creates the basis for moving from political dialogue to practical interaction. This is important because European partners are cautious about cooperation in Central Asia without a clear legal framework. Now such a framework appears. he said.
According to the Foreign Ministry, trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $1.2 billion in 2023, fell to $886 million in 2024, and then rose to $1.6 billion.
