Kazakhstan is shifting its uranium strategy to account for the construction of new nuclear power plants and to secure long-term fuel supplies, Orda.kz reports.

Atomic Energy Agency head Almasadam Satkaliyev said the country has revised its approach to uranium use in line with its domestic nuclear energy plans. He outlined three main scenarios:

The first is finding an optimal balance between the interests of investors and the long-term interests of the state. That is, when extracting uranium, we plan to proceed from the need to first ensure Kazakhstan and our nuclear power plants are supplied with domestic uranium products for many years. This is the priority.
The second scenario involves creating a reserve of low-enriched uranium fuel to supply Kazakhstan's future nuclear plants.
Third, some uranium deposits in Kazakhstan will not be developed. They will be reserved as assets for future generations,  said Satkaliyev
