U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reported the detention of Kazakh citizen Elaman Baltagerey. The agency described him as a “known or suspected terrorist” and said he is being prepared for deportation, Orda.kz reports.
According to ICE, Baltagerey was detained on June 5 during a targeted operation involving federal partners. The agency added that an immigration court had ordered his removal from the United States last summer, but he failed to appear at the court hearing.
Elaman Baltagerey was detained as a known or suspected terrorist with a final order of removal in effect. He will remain in ICE custody pending removal arrangements, the agency said in a statement.
However, the ICE publication raised questions among users on the social network X. One commenter noted that the agency’s report did not explain on what basis Baltagerey was described as a terrorist.
So where exactly does the court decision say he is a terrorist? He just missed the hearing, that’s all. That means you probably had a warrant for his arrest, but that does not indicate terrorism. Please explain, the user wrote under ICE’s post.
ICE has not provided additional information explaining why Baltagerey was placed in the “known or suspected terrorist” category. The agency also published a photo of the detainee.
