Kazakhstanis who plan to import cars from abroad on their own may face additional costs. Market participants told Finratings that total customs payments on imported cars could rise from about 33.4 % to 48 %, Orda.kz reports.
There is no official confirmation of these changes yet, but the issue has already sparked discussion among importers and buyers. This could become a problem for Kazakhstan, which was previously among the world’s ten largest buyers of Chinese cars.
The discussion started after statements by representatives of companies involved in car imports, the authors of the article noted. The possible changes may affect petrol cars and parallel hybrids. It remains unclear whether they will apply to electric cars and serial hybrids.
According to market participants, this is not about introducing a new duty. If the changes really take effect, the main consequence will be an increase in the final cost of imported cars.
The price increase will depend not only on the model, but also on the car’s value. The more expensive the car, the higher the additional payments.
According to one expert’s calculations, registering a Changan Qiyuan Q07 crossover now costs about 2.6 million tenge. If total payments rise to 48 %, the cost could grow to about 3.7 million tenge. In other words, registration alone could become more than one million tenge more expensive.
For more expensive cars, additional costs could reach 2–5 million tenge, according to market participants.
However, state bodies have not published any documents confirming changes to total customs payments on imported cars. For now, claims about a possible increase are based on information from market participants and still require official confirmation.
