Illegal Gold Mine With Chinese Workers Uncovered in East Kazakhstan

The illegal operation damaged several hectares of land and altered a riverbed, Orda.kz reports.

The Agency for Financial Monitoring (AFM) uncovered an illegal gold mine near the village of Akbulak in the Markakol District of the East Kazakhstan Region. The group allegedly mined and processed gold-bearing ore without permits.

Operations were conducted across a 30-hectare site using heavy machinery and industrial processing equipment. More than 30 workers were involved, including citizens of China,the agency said.

The illegal mining caused serious environmental damage. The fertile topsoil was destroyed, the landscape was disturbed and the riverbed was altered.

During searches, investigators seized six 40-ton dump trucks, four crawler excavators, a front-end loader and two industrial units used to extract and wash ore.

The investigation is ongoing.
