A 27-year-old graduate of a Kazakhstani medical university has been detained in India for allegedly using a forged certificate after repeatedly failing the country’s mandatory licensing exam, Orda.kz reports, citing Patrika.
Rajasthan police detained Delhi resident Nitin Kumar, who earned a medical degree in Kazakhstan in 2022 before returning to India.
Graduates of foreign medical schools must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) before they can practice in India. According to Patrika, Kumar failed the exam several times.
Investigators allege that he then paid an intermediary named Shubham Gurjar one million rupees — nearly five million tenge — for a forged certificate showing that he had passed the FMGE.
Kumar allegedly used the document to seek registration with the Rajasthan Medical Council and secure an internship at the Government Medical College in Karauli. He later completed an internship at a local hospital.
Police identified Kumar during an investigation into Gurjar. Officers traced him to Delhi’s Shahdara district and detained him.
Investigators believe dozens of foreign medical graduates may have used forged certificates. Twenty-nine people have reportedly been detained in the case, including 24 suspected unqualified practitioners, a former Rajasthan Medical Council registrar and several council employees.
According to the investigation, those behind the scheme charged clients between two million and three million rupees for forged documents, temporary medical registration and internship placements.
Indian authorities are now checking more than 100 medical workers who may have used the same scheme. The investigation is ongoing.
