From Grain To Rare Earth Metals: What Kazakhstan And Kenya Agreed On

Kazakhstan and Kenya signed 10 cooperation documents during the state visit of Kenyan President William Ruto, Orda.kz reports.

The two sides agreed to develop cooperation in digitalization, transport, tourism, trade, investment, space technologies, and mining.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev separately highlighted agriculture and food security.

Given the growing demand in Africa, we are interested in exporting grain to your country. Kenya, in turn, is famous for its magnificent tea, coffee, and flowers. Therefore, we are determined to open a Kenyan trade hub in Kazakhstan, which will give your businesses direct access to the entire Eurasian region,Tokayev said.

Another major area of cooperation is mining. Tokayev said Kazakhstan and Kenya have reserves of rare earth metals and critical minerals, demand for which is growing due to the development of digital technologies and the energy transition.

In addition, during the visit, Samruk-Kazyna JSC and Kenya’s state mining corporation, NAMICO, signed an agreement on joint investment projects in geological exploration and subsoil use.

Kazakhstan and Kenya also signed memorandums of cooperation on AI and e-government, transport, tourism, space technologies, trade, and investment. Separate agreements were concluded by the AIFC, Kazakh Invest, QazTrade, and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Kazakhstan.

A key initiative is connecting the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, with the ports of Mombasa and Lamu. The two sides also plan to develop cargo air routes and, in the future, launch a direct flight from Astana to Nairobi.
