Fire Breaks Out at Oil Field in Mangystau Region

A fire broke out at the Kulzhan oil field near the village of Borankul in the Mangystau region. Videos showing thick black smoke circulated on social media. Users suggested that oil storage tanks were burning, but authorities said this was not the case, Orda.kz reports.

According to the Mangystau Region Department of Ecology, a CA-320 cementing unit caught fire at 6:10 p.m. on August 7 while workers were removing sediment from storage tank No. 2. The tank, which has a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters, was empty at the time.

Employees of Meerbusch LLP, which operates the field, contained the fire at 7:20 p.m. and extinguished it completely by 8 p.m.

The Emergency Situations Department was not involved in the response. No one was injured, and no oil was spilled beyond the process equipment or the facility. Preliminary information indicates that the fire caused no significant damage.

The field is operating normally. The incident was reported to the Emergency Situations Department and the State Labor Inspectorate.

On August 9, an inspector and laboratory specialists from the Ecology Department visited the field, Lada.kz reported. They are examining the facility and considering whether to launch an unscheduled inspection.

The cause of the fire and the extent of any damage will be determined following the inspection.
