Kazakhstan has begun introducing artificial intelligence technologies to prevent the recurrence of major methane leaks, Ambassador-at-Large at the Foreign Ministry Zulfiya Suleimenova said, Orda.kz reports.
The accident at the Karaturun field in the Mangystau region occurred on June 9, 2023. After the explosion and fire, about 127,000 tons of methane were released into the atmosphere, making it one of the largest such incidents in the world.
According to Suleimenova, Kazakhstan is now focusing on technologies that make it possible to identify such risks in advance.
Artificial intelligence can be used in many different areas, including monitoring, detecting methane leaks and fires, identifying illegal dumps, and proposing ways to eliminate them. It makes it possible to detect problems at an early stage and prevent them.Suleimenova said.
She added that such solutions have not only environmental but also economic benefits. For example, released gas can be used for heating and electricity generation. At the same time, Suleimenova noted that AI also has a downside: it consumes significant resources itself, so the international community is already discussing ways to reduce its environmental impact.
