Kazakhstan has identified 46 fake diplomas and 20 websites offering to produce them, Orda.kz reports. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education explained how the documents can be checked.

The ministry says its database contains diplomas issued by Kazakhstani universities since 1991.

New diplomas receive a unique number and QR code through a centralized system. A newly issued diploma without either identifier is invalid.

Only designated university employees can access the system. A diploma number can be generated only if the student’s details appear on the Unified Higher Education Platform, the ministry said.

Diplomas can be checked at epvo.kz. Electronic copies are also available under Digital Documents in the eGov mobile app.

Making or using a fake diploma is a criminal offense. Under Article 385 of Kazakhstan’s Criminal Code, it can result in a fine, corrective labor, restriction of liberty, or up to two years in prison.

Earlier, a Kazakhstan-trained medical graduate was arrested in India. Investigators allege that he bought a forged licensing certificate and used it to complete an internship at a state hospital.
