After casting his ballot in Kazakhstan’s Kurultai election, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed questions about whether he could seek another term. He confirmed that he is legally entitled to run again but did not disclose his plans, Orda.kz reports.
During the briefing, journalists referred to a recent Constitutional Court ruling confirming that Tokayev may stand for election under the new Constitution. They asked whether he intended to run and whether the next presidential election would be held in 2029 or called early.
Tokayev confirmed that he had the legal right to seek another term.
The Constitutional Court made that decision. It is legal, and I therefore have the legal right to be elected again,Tokayev said.
However, he did not say whether he intended to exercise that right. According to the president, it is too early to discuss either his candidacy or the timing of the next election.
Let us meet again. Perhaps next year I will give you a more specific answer,Tokayev said.
“Why Keep the Money Abroad?”
Instead of discussing the next election, Tokayev focused on what he described as the country’s immediate priorities. He said Kazakhstan should effectively become a “large construction site,” particularly through the construction of social facilities.
The president said he was prepared to use National Fund assets for this purpose.
Why keep the money invested in foreign securities when it could be used for the benefit of the people? I am against sitting on this money like a dog in the manger. It should serve the people, our citizens,Tokayev said.
The president also referred to the difficult global situation, saying Kazakhstan was moving “along the edge of a cliff.” Nevertheless, he said the country had managed to preserve domestic stability and economic growth.
Tokayev described the ongoing Kurultai election as historic.
