Almaty Covers Open Irrigation Channels as Part of Urban Renewal

In Almaty, traditional open irrigation channels are being covered as part of the renewal of urban infrastructure, Orda.kz reports, citing local authorities.
If these channels were once one of the city’s defining features, today many of them effectively function as stormwater channels, carrying away rainwater and meltwater.
They are now being partially covered for safety reasons, so that pedestrians do not fall in and drivers do not get into accidents. The measure also makes maintenance easier and improves street sanitation.
In addition, it helps to implement irrigation systems and develop landscaping.the akimat said.
At the same time, the system itself is not disappearing. Drainage is being preserved, and water will continue to flow through the channels, while access to them will be ensured through special technical solutions.
