The crematorium in Almaty was built and transferred to the city’s balance sheet back in October 2025. But it still is not operating because Kazakhstan has no rules regulating cremation, Orda.kz reports.
Almaty’s Public Health Department gave this response to an enquiry from the редакция. The facility is legally registered, but it cannot be launched yet.
The cremation process in Kazakhstan is not sufficiently regulated by law. the department said in its reply.
Officials are now developing a pricing list, internal regulations and territorial norms. These documents are meant to determine in which cases cremation will be allowed, including for foreigners and unclaimed bodies. Until they are adopted, the crematorium will not begin operating.
At the same time, the department said it was unaware of the activities of funeral agencies offering cremation services outside Kazakhstan.
