Where Kazakhstan Will Upgrade Major Power Plants

Kazakhstan will update and expand 11 power plants across the country. This will provide an additional about 2.5 gigawatts of capacity, Orda.kz reports.
The Ministry of Energy plans to update existing capacities and increase electricity generation. This concerns the modernization, reconstruction, and expansion of equipment at a number of CHPs and state district power plants.
The list includes:
- Aksu — modernization of power unit No. 7;
- Ekibastuz — construction of new power units at state district power plant No. 2;
- Karaganda and Shakhtinsk — expansion of the CHP;
- Oskemen and Sogra — expansion of stations;
- Topar — modernization of the state district power plant;
- Balkhash and Zhezkazgan — introduction of turbo units;
- Temirtau — expansion of CHPP-2 at Qarmet;
- Stepnogorsk — modernization of the CHP.
The authorities expect that these projects will provide an additional about 2.5 GW of capacity, increase the efficiency of the stations, and extend their service life.
