Tolejan Barlybaev has been appointed Kazakhstan’s new ambassador to Ukraine, replacing Darkhan Kaletayev, Orda.kz reports, citing Aqorda.
The change was announced on April 17.
President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev relieved Darkhan Kaletayev of his duties. Kaletayev, a former minister and member of parliament, had served as ambassador to Ukraine since February 2020.
His successor, Tolejan Barlybaev, is a career diplomat. Until November 2024, he was Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Slovakia. Before that, he led diplomatic missions in Croatia and concurrently in Montenegro, Bosnia, and Herzegovina.
Speculation about Kaletayev’s departure had surfaced in September 2023 but was later denied. At the time, he told an Orda.kz journalist in a brief message:
I’m in Kyiv. Still the ambassador.
Just over a week ago, Ukraine appointed a new envoy to Kazakhstan — Viktor Maiko.
The position had been vacant since 2022.
