Tiger Returns to Kazakhstan’s Wild After 70-Year Absence

A female Amur tiger named Umit has been released into the wild at the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve. She is the first tiger to enter Kazakhstan’s natural habitat since the predators disappeared from the country more than 70 years ago, Orda.kz reports.
The release marks the first practical stage of a program to return tigers to their historical range. The southern Balkhash region and the Ili River valley were selected because the Caspian tiger, also known as the Turan tiger, once lived there. The population disappeared because of the loss of tugai forests, declining numbers of wild prey and poaching.
Preparations for the tigers’ return took more than ten years, according to the Ministry of Ecology. During that time, the reserve was established, prey populations were restored, adaptation enclosures were built and a permanent scientific monitoring system was introduced.
Four Amur tigers — two adults and two cubs — arrived in Kazakhstan in May 2026. Before her release, Umit underwent veterinary examinations and behavioral tests. Specialists assessed her health, hunting skills and readiness to survive independently.
The tigress was fitted with a GPS/GSM satellite collar. Specialists are now monitoring her movements around the clock using satellite data and camera traps.
The male tiger remains under observation and will be released only after completing all tests. The two cubs will remain in their enclosures for at least another 18 months.
The program’s ultimate goal is to establish a stable tiger population in the Ili River delta and the southern Balkhash region.
