An Astana court has sentenced the former director of the city ambulance service and three former employees. Three were convicted of embezzling more than 443 million tenge, Orda.kz reports.
According to the court, the defendants operated a vehicle repair shop at the ambulance station from 2020 to 2023. They claimed that repairing ambulances in-house would be faster and cheaper, but instead illegally wrote off spare parts and signed contracts for services that were never provided.
The former director received nine years in prison, while two other former managers were sentenced to eight years. They pleaded not guilty. The court also permanently barred them from holding civil-service positions.
The National Security Committee estimated the damage at 740 million tenge, although an earlier estimate put the losses at 850 million. The court granted the ambulance station’s claim for 443 million tenge.
A former warehouse manager admitted stealing property worth 268,000 tenge and repaid the money. He received a noncustodial sentence but was released from punishment under an amnesty.
