Russia To Help Expand Gas Supply To Northern Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan plans to increase the country’s gasification level to 80 % by 2035. One of the key projects will be the construction of the Ishim–Astana main gas pipeline, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said at a government meeting, Orda.kz reports.
According to him, Kazakhstan and Gazprom signed a memorandum last year on the construction of the Ishim–Astana main gas pipeline. The project is expected to provide gas to Astana, Kokshetau and Petropavlovsk.
On October 9, 2025, the government of Kazakhstan and PJSC Gazprom signed a memorandum on the implementation of the Ishim–Astana main gas pipeline project to gasify the northern regions. The project will ensure reliable gas supply to Astana, Kokshetau and Petropavlovsk, and define the routes for natural gas supplies to the country’s northern regions, the minister said.
Akkenzhenov said Kazakhstan’s gasification level has now reached 64.2 %, and 13.1 million people have access to natural gas.
If gasification projects implemented by local executive bodies are financed on time, and if the Ishim–Astana main gas pipeline project is implemented, we plan to increase the country’s gasification level from 64.2 % to 80 % by 2035,Akkenzhenov said.
He added that Kazakhstan will continue developing its gas transmission system this year. In total, 40 projects are planned, including seven ongoing and 33 new ones.
