Reports of an attack on the Orenburg gas processing plant have again raised questions about Karachaganak’s dependence on the Russian facility, Orda.kz reports.

Experts and industry channels began discussing the issue after reports of the incident. Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said the situation had not affected gas supplies to domestic consumers.

The Orenburg gas processing plant is important for Kazakhstan because of Karachaganak. Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. supplies raw gas to Gazprom’s Orenburg plant. After processing, part of the volume returns to Kazakhstan as commercial gas and liquefied petroleum gas.

According to oil and gas expert Olzhas Baideldinov, up to nine billion cubic meters of gas per year pass through the Orenburg plant. With Kazakhstan’s annual commercial gas production at about 30 billion cubic meters, this is almost a third of the total volume.

The Karachaganak–Orenburg link has already shown its importance for the industry. After an attack on the plant in autumn 2025, gas intake was temporarily restricted and production at Karachaganak was reduced. Orda.kz has previously analyzed this issue in detail.

The Energy Ministry said the new incident did not affect the stability of commercial gas supplies to Kazakh consumers.

The incident did not affect the stability of commercial gas supplies to domestic consumers. Logistics were promptly adjusted by dispatch services, and counter gas volumes are being supplied through an alternative route, the ministry said.

Energy Ministry spokesperson Asel Serikpayeva added that the lost fuel volumes are being covered from other sources.

In addition to the gas processing plant issue, UAV attacks on Russian facilities may also affect private refineries in West Kazakhstan Region, which risk being left without fuel supplies.
