Russia and Azerbaijan Agree on Compensation After AZAL Crash Near Aktau

Russia and Azerbaijan have issued a joint statement on the AZAL plane crash near Aktau, saying they have reached agreement on key issues, including compensation for the families of the victims, Orda.kz reports. The statement was published by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry on April 15, 2026.
According to the statement, the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 on December 25, 2024 resulted from the unintended operation of an air defense system in Russian airspace. The two sides said the settlement followed agreements reached by the presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia during their meeting in Dushanbe on October 9, 2025.
Both sides expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said they intended to continue developing cooperation between the two countries.
The Embraer E190 crashed near Aktau on the morning of December 25, 2024. The Azerbaijan Airlines flight was traveling from Baku to Grozny. There were 67 people on board, and 38 died, including six citizens of Kazakhstan. s: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Russia, AZAL
