Romania expelled Russian military attaché Victor Makovskiy and his deputy Evgeny Ignatiev on March 5 for violating diplomatic protocol, Orda reports, citing Euronews.
This exceptional measure is not taken lightly, but only when violations are serious, explained Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrei Tarnea.
After being notified of the expulsion, Russian officials promised they would respond.
According to anonymous sources speaking to Euronews, the diplomats' removal may be linked to the political campaign of Călin Georgescu.
Georgescu, whose first-round victory in November's ultimately invalidated election surprised many, was recently arrested while under investigation for campaign finance irregularities and promoting fascist figures and organizations.
