According to Romania's Prosecutor's Office, searches were conducted at 47 locations, Orda reports, citing Radio Free Europe/Liberty's Romanian service.
Romanian authorities detained Călin Georgescu, the former presidential candidate who won the first round of elections before the Constitutional Court annulled the results.
He was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning.
The Prosecutor General's Office has announced charges including incitement to actions against the constitutional order, dissemination of false information, campaign finance violations, property declaration irregularities, establishing a fascist, racist, or xenophobic organization, promoting the public cult of persons guilty of genocide crimes, and creating an antisemitic organization.
The prosecutor's press release regarding the criminal cases does not explicitly name Georgescu.
Meanwhile, Digi24 reports that investigators have uncovered foreign connections involving Dorina Mihai, who was Călin Georgescu's bodyguard.
Digi24 writes that evidence suggests Mihai maintained relationships with Russian government officials and members of Ramzan Kadyrov's military personnel in Chechnya.
