The verdict for five activists who opposed the construction of the NPP will be delivered on August 26, Orda.kz reports.
Today, the Almaly District Court was expected to issue a decision in the activists’ case. However, the verdict was unexpectedly postponed until tomorrow.
At the very start of the hearing, the judge also banned video recording and ordered all media representatives to leave the courtroom.
A few days ago, the prosecutor requested sentences for the defendants. The state prosecutor called for Aidar Mubarakov, Nurlan Zhauylbayev, Fazylzhan Sydykov, Nurlan Temirgaliyev, and Zhanat Kazakbay to be found guilty of “attempting to organize riots” and asked the court to sentence each of them to five years in a penal colony.
Investigators allege that on the day of the referendum on the nuclear power plant, the defendants planned to instigate riots “using force, arson, destruction of property, weapons, explosives, or explosive devices,” and also intended to offer “armed resistance to government officials.”
The activists reject the charges. They maintain that while they oppose the construction of the nuclear power plant, they never planned any riots or violent acts. Some suggested they are being persecuted for their civic stance.
The defense argues that the prosecution has no material evidence.
