Kazakhstan: Prosecutors Seek Five-Year Prison Terms for Five Nuclear Plant Opponents
Five men aged 55 to 67 were detained on the eve of the October 2024 referendum on building a nuclear power plant, Orda.kz reports.
Investigators accuse Aidar Mubarakov, Nurlan Zhuyulbayev, Fazylzhan Sydykov, Nurlan Temirgaliyev, and Zhanat Kazakbay of attempting to organize riots. According to the case, they allegedly planned violent unrest on referendum day, including arson, destruction of property, and armed resistance.
The activists deny the charges, insisting they only opposed the nuclear plant and never intended riots.
Their lawyers say no material evidence has been presented. Some of the defendants believe they are being prosecuted for civic activism.
The trial is underway at the Almaly District Court in Almaty.
