Astana’s Police Department has launched an investigation concerning the spread of false reports about the previously reported detention of former Defense Minister Ruslan Zhaqsylyqov, Orda.kz reports.
A pre-trial investigation is underway under Article 274, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan in connection with the dissemination of knowingly false information in the media about the alleged detention of the individual in question. In accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code, details of the investigation are not subject to disclosure and may only be made public with the permission of the prosecutor, the Interior Ministry’s press service stated
Speculation about Zhaqsylyqov’s arrest began on June 14, when several Telegram channels claimed he had been detained. The former Minister quickly denied the rumors, saying he was at home.
Sources told Orda.kz that the rumors may have stemmed from investigative actions taking place within the Ministry of Defense. These developments — including Zhaqsylyqov’s resignation — are unfolding amid a major increase in Kazakhstan’s military budget and ongoing army modernization.
