Part of Shymkent’s 3-Billion-Tenge Dam Destroyed One Month After Completion

Unknown individuals extracted stone from the structure, damaging 40 metres of concrete reinforcement, Orda.kz reports
According to a statement by the Shymkent akimat on social media, the riverbank reinforcement works, which stretched for 5.3 kilometres, were completed in December of last year. The project involved strengthening the riverbed and concreting the banks in the Igilik, Zhanatalap and Kokbulak areas to protect against spring floods.
«However, just one month after the work was completed, unknown individuals began illegally extracting stone from the riverbed. As a result, they damaged approximately 40 metres of the concrete dam,» the agency reported
Law enforcement authorities are identifying those involved. The contractor will repair the damaged section at their own expense, as the project is still within its seven-year warranty period.
Despite this, the akimat assures that the situation on the river remains stable and there is no threat of flooding.
As previously reported, the prosecutor’s office of the Kyzylorda Region uncovered a major theft of budget funds at the regional branch of the State Enterprise «Kazvodkhoz». An inspection revealed that, of the 60,000 tonnes of rubble stone paid for, only 47,000 tonnes were delivered to the site. This rubble stone was required for the reinforcement of the Kokaral Dam, a strategically important site, and the resulting damage to the state exceeded 188 million tenge.
