Malaysian Firm Proton Holdings Plans to Launch EV Production in Kazakhstan

Malaysian automaker Proton Holdings Berhad is planning to establish electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facilities in Kazakhstan, the country’s Ministry of Industry and Construction announced following a meeting with Minister Yersayyn Nagaspayev, Orda.kz reports.
Discussions focused on investment opportunities, the localization of automotive production, and the broader promotion of electric transport within Kazakhstan. Proton representatives stated their intention to manufacture EVs under the e.MAS brand and confirmed plans to base production operations in the country.
Project costs or the number of planned factories have not yet been disclosed.
Still, both sides explored the technological foundation and export potential of the initiative. As a next step, the Ministry and Proton Holdings agreed to form a working group tasked with developing a roadmap for the proposed manufacturing sites.
Minister Nagaspayev also noted that in 2026, Kazakhstan will see the launch of two additional car plants in Almaty and Qostanay, with a combined annual capacity of up to 190,000 vehicles.
