The Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Kazakhstan has commented on the new tariffs imposed on Kazakhstan's imports by decree of U.S. President Donald Trump, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Ministry, most of the goods exported from Kazakhstan to the United States are not affected by the new tariffs and are included in a list of exemptions published on the White House website.
The basis of Kazakhstan's exports to the United States are crude oil, uranium, silver, and ferroalloys. These and other categories, which account for 92% of deliveries, are included in the list of exceptions provided for by the decree of the US President 'On the regulation of imports through reciprocal tariffs to eliminate trade practices that lead to a significant and persistent deficit in the United States in trade in goods,' the Ministry of Trade emphasized.
By the end of 2024, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the U.S. reached $4.2 billion, growing by four percent over the year. Kazakhstan's exports to the U.S. rose by 30.6%, reaching $2 billion, while imports from the U.S. totaled $2.2 billion.
The new duties will apply to specific product groups, representing a relatively small export volume of $95.2 million in 2024. These include phosphorus ($15.9 million), ferrosilicon ($12.7 million), lenses ($4.1 million), wheat gluten ($4 million), and ammonium nitrate ($2.4 million).
The introduced tariff measures will affect only 4.8% of the total volume of Kazakhstan's exports to the United States. The government will initiate consultations with the American side to discuss the possibility of not applying additional duties to Kazakhstan, the Ministry assured.
