Kazakhstani citizen Makhmutkhan Shernazarov has been jailed in China after a fight with local residents, Orda.kz reports.
His relatives claim he was defending himself during a group attack.
In an appeal posted on Threads, Shernazarov’s relatives do not deny that a tragedy occurred but ask that the circumstances be taken into account. According to a neighbor from Kazakhstan, the man who died had been harassing a girl, and Shernazarov stood up for her. A verbal conflict began and escalated into a fight. The neighbor also claims the man did not die immediately and that attempts were made to resuscitate him for about 30 minutes.
Video from the scene shows several people beating the Kazakhstani citizen and preventing him from leaving.
Mahmutkhan’s actions were self-defense. The man’s death occurred during this self-defense. It was not planned violence. He was not the aggressor, the post said.
Shernazarov’s family recorded a video appeal. Relatives admit that they do not know all the details of the case. They are raising money for a lawyer and want to ask forgiveness from the family of the deceased.
Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention. The Consulate General in Guangzhou received a notification from the Public Security Department of Guangdong Province. The Chinese side suspects the Kazakhstani citizen of intentionally causing bodily harm. Diplomats are in contact with the detainee’s relatives and are providing consular assistance.
