A 23-year-old Astana resident has been sentenced to three years in prison for fabricating a story about sexual abuse in the military to solicit money on social media, Orda.kz reports.
According to police, the man anonymously posted on Threads in February, claiming that a commanding officer had sexually abused him during his military service. He said his life was in danger, asked for money to leave Kazakhstan and provided bank details for donations.
Authorities launched an investigation after another user reported the post. Investigators found that the story was entirely fabricated and that the man had never served in the military.
He used the bank account of a 17-year-old acquaintance, whom investigators said he had deceived. The account received more than 100 transfers in two days.
During the investigation, the man admitted that he had invented the story to raise money.
The court found him guilty of fraud and knowingly spreading false information and sentenced him to three years in prison.
