Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan’s national nuclear company, has signed a contract with Czech energy giant ČEZ a.s. to supply uranium concentrate for use in nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic, Orda.kz reports.
According to Kazatomprom, the agreement significantly expands the geography of its exports. Over the next seven years, Kazakhstan will supply about one-third of the uranium needed to produce Westinghouse fuel assemblies for the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant — one of the Czech Republic’s primary sources of electricity.
The contract was signed in Prague. ČEZ a.s., the Czech counterpart in the deal, operates six reactors at two nuclear power plants and supplies around 36% of the country’s electricity.
“Kazatomprom continues to expand its presence in Europe and strengthen its strategy to diversify its sales portfolio. This is another important milestone on our path to becoming a preferred partner for the global nuclear energy industry,” said Vladislav Baiguzhin, Kazatomprom’s Chief Commercial Officer.
Earlier, the company also signed a deal to supply uranium to a Swiss nuclear power plant.
