Kazakhstan plans to use Iranian ports to expand trade routes and reach markets in the Persian Gulf, East Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, Orda.kz reports.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin said Iran remains Kazakhstan’s key southern transport corridor.
Iran is the road to the south. Right now, this is the only direction where there is a railway. We go through Mangyshlak station, then through Turkmenistan. There is a junction that allows access to different directions,Zhumangarin said.
He said Iran had almost completed construction of a railway to the port of Chabahar. According to him, the project is about 90% ready, while Kazakhstan is also considering work through the port of Bandar Abbas.
As far as I know, 15 hectares of land have been allocated to us there. Due to tragic events, some processes were suspended, but now the work will continue. We will develop this site together with Iranian companies,Zhumangarin said.
The minister recalled that Kazakhstan and Iran had earlier set a target to increase mutual trade turnover to $3 billion.
Kazakhstan and Iran have been tasked by the heads of state with reaching $3 billion in trade turnover. However, for many years we have remained at about $500 million. Sometimes we grow a little, sometimes we fall a little. This is largely due to sanctions. As soon as the sanctions are lifted, everything will immediately take off,Zhumangarin said.
He stressed that through Iran, Kazakhstan would be able to supply a wide range of goods not only to the Iranian market, but also to East Africa, Southeast Asia, India, and Pakistan.
Kazakhstan is also considering development of the Trans-Afghan route, which could eventually provide access to Pakistan’s Karachi port through a dry port on the Afghan-Pakistani border.
