Kazakhstan may determine the location of its second nuclear power plant by this fall, Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar told reporters on the sidelines of the Central Asia–China summit, Orda.kz reports.
“Nobody will delay. By autumn, I think, there will already be some figures, data, a site. Maybe even earlier,” Sklyar said.
He added that the second plant could potentially be built faster than the first, depending on the selected contractor’s technology.
“Maybe, why not. Everything will depend on the technology of the company that will build it. We plan not to delay the construction of the second NPP.”
Sklyar did not provide a cost estimate for the project, noting that final figures will be determined after the development of a feasibility study.
On June 16, President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev stated that Kazakhstan is considering China’s CNNC as a partner for the country’s nuclear energy program.
