Kazakhstan plans to revise its approach to selecting university applicants and reconsider the format of the Unified National Testing system, Orda.kz reports.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balayeva, the education system should take into account not only students’ knowledge, but also their abilities and the needs of the economy.
This is not just another reform, but a transition to a new stage, in which improving the selection system, including the UNT, plays an important role.she said.
At the same time, Balayeva said the current testing format does not always ensure high-quality selection.
Multiple attempts at the UNT do not fully solve the problem of selecting applicants effectively. Moreover, today universities are limited in their ability to independently select talented students.she said.
She added that one of the proposed changes is the introduction of additional exams for applicants to teacher-training programs. Alongside UNT results, applicants could also be assessed on critical thinking and communication skills.
The government is also discussing the option of allowing the UNT to be taken only once and ending conditional university enrollment.
