Kazakhstan’s new tenge banknotes were made smaller so they would fit more easily in wallets and cost less to produce, Orda.kz reports.

National Bank Chairman Timur Suleimenov said the new banknotes are now smaller than U.S. dollar bills and closer to an international standard size.

We reduced the size of the banknotes so they would fit in a wallet. Now this is more or less an international standard, and such banknotes are more convenient to use. We do not plan to make them even smaller,Suleimenov said.

He added that the smaller format also helped reduce production costs.

There is a sheet, and previously five banknotes were made from one sheet. Now, because the banknotes are smaller, the sheet is used more efficiently — 90% of it goes into producing bills. That is where the savings come from. The exact amount is classified, the National Bank chief said.
