A Center for Forecasting Criminal Threats and Public Security Risks has been created within the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office, Orda.kz reports.
Since April 18, the committee has been given responsibility for forecasting and analytical work. This includes risk analysis and the preparation of recommendations for state bodies. The Prosecutor General’s Office announced this at a meeting on combating cybercrime.
According to the agency’s press service, the center’s analysts say criminals are moving away from traditional telecom channels and shifting to messengers, with most fraudulent calls now taking place on WhatsApp.
On April 4, Kazakhstan recorded and solved its first case involving the use of an SMS blaster in fraud. In total, experts have identified 18 new cyber threats. These include the use of SMS blasters abroad for mass messaging that bypasses operators, phishing schemes, deepfakes, number spoofing and the use of unregistered SIM cards.
Prosecutor General Berik Asylov said banks, telecom operators and online platforms are responsible for taking timely measures to protect users from fraudsters.
