On the sidelines of the Majilis, Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin addressed questions about the possible revision of the Baikonur Cosmodrome lease agreement, Orda.kz reports.
For now, there are no plans to change the current terms, as Kazakhstan is satisfied with its existing agreements with Russia.
I don’t think we’ll be revisiting any agreements. Why? We’re receiving a decent amount of strong currency, so there’s been no need to raise this issue. At least, I haven’t been given that task,Zhumangarin said.
When asked whether Baikonur could potentially be leased to other countries, the Minister noted that Kazakhstan is also interested in using the facility itself.
“Well, first of all, we want to use the site ourselves. If everything goes as planned, we’re finally preparing to launch Baiterek and carry out a test launch in cooperation with Russia. That’s the starting point.”
As for handing over the cosmodrome to other countries, there are no concrete plans at this time.
Just a week earlier, Minister of Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev also stated that Kazakhstan has no intention of revising the current lease terms.
Russia pays $115 million annually for Baikonur, an amount Kazakhstan considers profitable.
