Kazakhstan Adds AI to School Computer Science Classes

Kazakhstan is adding artificial intelligence to school computing classes and renaming two subjects. “Digital Literacy” in grades 1–4 will become “Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence,” while “Computer Science” in grades 5–11 will become “Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.” The Education Ministry has explained what will change beyond the names,  Orda.kz reports.

According to the ministry, the updated subjects include new sections on artificial intelligence and 43 learning objectives. The aim is to teach students not only how to use AI, but how to do so effectively, responsibly and with an understanding of its limitations.

• In grades 1–4, children will encounter AI through simple examples from everyday life. They will also learn the basics of digital safety, personal data protection and responsible behavior online.
• In grades 5–9, students will learn how to use AI tools in their studies, write effective prompts and critically assess the results. The curriculum will also cover cybersecurity and academic integrity.
• In grades 10–11, the focus will shift to how AI works and how it can be applied in practice. Students will study the basics of machine learning, neural networks, data analysis and applied cryptography.

The Education Ministry said the updated curricula were tested during the previous academic year and received a positive expert assessment. They are now awaiting approval.

The ministry is also preparing guidance for teachers on the effective and safe use of AI in the classroom.
