An intoxicated Toyota Highlander driver intended to escape pursuit by giving a police officer a ride on the hood of his car, Orda.kz reports, citing the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The police had stopped the car for running a red light. The driver's behavior raised their suspicions, so they asked him to show his documents. However, the man refused and attempted to escape.
In order to stop a dangerous driver and avoid tragic consequences involving other road users, inspector Bakytzhan Boranbay blocked the car's path. But the man continued driving, ran over the police officer, carried him on the hood for several meters and escaped, the department commented.
The suspect was eventually detained, and an examination confirmed his drug intoxication. The driver was placed in a temporary detention facility, and a criminal case was opened.
The detainee faces up to 12 years in prison for using violence that endangered the life of a police officer. The investigation is ongoing.
As a reminder, starting January 1, drivers will have to pay higher fines for violating traffic rules.
