Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov commented on the recent sentencing of former president Almazbek Atambayev, Orda.kz reports, citing Kabar.
Japarov said that while the court's decision cannot be altered, even by the President, he holds the constitutional right to grant amnesty.
“If a formal request is made, I may grant amnesty,” Japarov told Kabar news agency.
He added that although the verdict was within the law, he felt a lighter sentence, such as probation or fines, would have been preferable, given the time that has passed since the 2019 Koi-Tash events.
Atambayev served as President of Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017. He was previously imprisoned in connection with another case but was released in 2023 due to health reasons. He later left for Spain and has not returned.
