Former Kyrgyz President Sentenced in Absentia to Over 11 Years in Prison

The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek has sentenced former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev in absentia to 11 years and three months in prison, Orda.kz reports.

The verdict includes confiscation of property and the revocation of all state honors. Atambayev was found guilty under several articles of the criminal code, including the illegal acquisition of land plots in the village of Koi-Tash (Chui Region), corruption linked to the modernization of the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant, and organizing mass unrest in Koi-Tash on August 7–8, 2019.

According to local media, other senior officials involved in the case were also given custodial sentences.

Atambayev served as President of Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017. He was previously imprisoned in connection with another case but was released in 2023 due to health reasons. He later left for Spain and has not returned.
