Turkish operator TAV Airports plans to invest $362 million into developing Almaty International Airport by 2029, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Ministry of Transport, a memorandum has been signed with Almaty International Airport JSC outlining where the investment will go.
TAV Airports became the airport’s majority shareholder in 2020, acquiring an 85% stake. Over the next few years, the company is committing to major improvements in infrastructure and service, including:
- Renovating the domestic terminal
- Reconstructing the runway
- Building a new cargo apron
- Modernizing and digitizing warehouses
- Constructing an airport hotel.
Beyond physical upgrades, the company plans to improve working conditions for airport staff:
- Salaries will increase by 25% within a year
- A new medical center will open for employees and local residents
- A new training center accredited by Airports Council International will be established.
The investment is also expected to create 600 new jobs at the airport by the end of 2025.
While the airport’s new international terminal opened in June 2024, a pipe burst in February 2025 caused flooding from the ceiling. More recently, the airport was in the news over a hostage incident involving an employee.
