German Couple Dies in Akmola Region Highway Crash

A couple from Germany was killed in a collision on the Astana–Petropavl highway. Their nine-year-old daughter was injured, while eight people in total were taken to hospital, an Orda.kz correspondent reports.
The crash occurred on August 10 at kilometer 97 of the highway in the Akmola region. Regional police said a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter collided with a GAZ-53 truck.
Two passengers in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter died as a result of the crash. Seven other passengers in the vehicle and one passenger in the GAZ-53 sustained various injuries and were taken to hospital,the police press service said.
A source familiar with the case told Orda.kz that the two people killed were a married couple from Germany.
The man was sitting in the front passenger seat. The woman initially survived the collision but later died of her injuries in hospital.
Their nine-year-old daughter was also traveling in the vehicle. She was injured and hospitalized.
Police have opened a pretrial investigation and are working to establish the circumstances and cause of the collision. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility.
