In the Talgar district of the Almaty region, fourteen-year-old Alikhan died after being assaulted by his peers. His family insists he was deliberately taken to a secluded spot, while investigators are considering whether the boy may have fallen on his own.
An Orda.kz correspondent traveled to Talgar to speak with the grieving family.
Late in the evening of September 13, Alikhan was walking home with a friend when four eleventh-graders stopped them near a store.
The group led the boy to an area without cameras or streetlights.
The teenager was allegedly assaulted so severely that he lost consciousness.
Yerasyl (name changed — Ed.) assualted him. I heard he’s a boxing champion. A woman took my son’s phone that evening and told me he ‘fell on his own.’ When I got there, the ground was wet — you could see they had washed his face. We called an ambulance, and it arrived almost an hour later,
Alikhan’s father, Daniyar Nurgaliev, said.
The boy was rushed to intensive care. A few hours later, two teenagers showed up at the hospital. They were later identified as the same youths involved in the beating.
Alikhan had a large blue hematoma under his jaw. He remained in intensive care for 17 days and died without regaining consciousness.
While in the hospital, the father noticed a woman constantly staying near his son. It turned out she was the mother of Yerasyl, the teenager accused of the assault.
According to Nurgaliev, the suspect's family visited their home twice, but not to apologize.
The first time, they hinted both boys were to blame. The second time, they started mentioning bandits and asked, ‘Do you know Bakha?’ They were trying to intimidate me,
he said.
A forensic examination concluded that the boy could have fallen on his own, but the father strongly disputes this and has filed a complaint.
Alikhan was a quiet, creative child who avoided conflict.
He loved poetry. He knew dozens of poems by Mukagali Makatayev. Just a week before the tragedy, he told us he dreamed of becoming a journalist,
his sister Anar recalled.
Police said the teenage suspect has been placed in a temporary detention facility.
A comprehensive and objective investigation is underway. The case is under special supervision,
the department stated.
The district has seen a series of violent incidents over the past year: in one high-profile case, 16-year-old Sherzat Polat died in a mass fight, prompting the dismissal of the district’s akim and much of the security leadership.
Several months ago, in the village of Qyzylqairat, a local car service employee killed the brother of lawyer Gaukhar Sariyeva and abducted her sister’s two-year-old daughter.
