Moscow’s Basmanny Court has sentenced Pyotr Vrublevsky, the former Ukrainian ambassador to Kazakhstan, to six years in a general regime penal colony, Orda.kz reports.
The verdict was reported by Russian outlet RBK, citing Vrublevsky’s alleged lawyer, Dmitry Kirsanov.
The Basmanny Court sentenced Vrublevsky to six years in a general regime penal colony in absentia, RBK quoted the lawyer as saying.
Vrublevsky was previously found guilty in absentia of inciting hatred and enmity on the basis of nationality and language, following comments he made during an interview in August 2022 in which he spoke about Russians.
In response, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry declared the ambassador persona non grata, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later dismissed Vrublevsky and recalled him to Kyiv.
The case has seen legal reversals. On November 11, 2024, the Moscow City Court overturned the original sentence and ordered a retrial.
