Former Presidential Residence: Opening of Almaty’s New Park Delayed

City authorities had initially promised that Almaty’s new park, built on the site of the former presidential residence, would open by Republic Day. However, the grand opening scheduled for October 25 will not take place— the deadline has been postponed, Orda.kz reports.
According to a press release from the Almaty Akimat, following Akim Darkhan Satybaldy’s inspection of construction sites, the square was 97% complete as of October 22.
A pond has been built, which will be used as a skating rink in the winter. Work is nearing completion on the pedestrian, jogging, and asphalt paths, as well as the installation of an automatic irrigation system and outdoor lighting. Ninety-five coniferous and 228 deciduous trees have been planted, and the planting of 469 coniferous and 384 deciduous shrubs, as well as perennial plant arrangements, is ongoing. Restoration of the metal structures of the old fence and its foundation is underway,
the statement said.
However, the Akimat later clarified that the park would not open in time for Republic Day, with the official opening now postponed until the first ten days of November.
The idea of transforming the site of the presidential residence — destroyed during the January 2022 unrest — into a public park was first announced in March 2022. Construction only began in the spring of 2025.
