A Sri Lankan teacher is set to face an administrative court in Almaty after a conflict with the private Sunbridge school, Orda.kz reports.

The case concerns Trishani Perera, who was invited to Kazakhstan in 2024 to teach English at the school. The alleged violations were identified during proceedings linked to a complaint filed by Sunbridge.

Details of the case became public after an appeal was posted on social media by the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights.

According to Perera, the conflict began after she tried to receive her final payment following dismissal. In May, the school told her that her contract would not be extended because of financial difficulties. Perera said the employer withheld 200,000 tenge from her final payment, citing housing costs, although she claims such terms had not been agreed in the contract.

Perera refused to leave Kazakhstan until the payment issue was settled. After the dispute, school representatives told police that the former employee had used obscene language.

During the check, law enforcement officers found that the teacher’s visa had been canceled on May 10, but she had not been notified, according to the appeal.

The appeal also says her residence permit had been issued through a third-party LLP for business activity, where she was listed as deputy director, instead of through the school.

Perera now faces trial over illegal stay in Kazakhstan.
