Finnish President Alexander Stubb is in Astana on an official visit. At Aqorda, President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev held talks with him to discuss expanding economic cooperation, uranium supplies, and new investment opportunities, Orda.kz reports.
Finland is among the largest investors in Kazakhstan’s economy. Since 2005, total investment has reached approximately $500 million.
Toqayev and Stubb discussed the possible supply of Kazakh uranium to Finnish nuclear power plants. According to Almassadam Satkaliyev, head of the Atomic Energy Agency, negotiations on volumes and timelines are already underway.
“This visit provides a good opportunity to discuss the details,” Satkaliyev noted.
Following the meeting, the two sides signed a package of agreements covering cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy, radiation safety, and joint response to oil spill emergencies.
A Personal Souvenir
President Stubb recalled first meeting Toqayev in 2008, when he served as Finland’s foreign minister. During that visit, he attended a cycling session at the Astana velodrome and trained alongside professional riders.
As a souvenir, I received a jersey from the Astana cycling team signed by Alexander Vinokurov. It holds an honorary place on the wall in my home,
Stubb shared.
A Kazakhstan–Finland business forum is also taking place in Astana. President Toqayev expressed hope that the event will inspire Kazakh entrepreneurs to strengthen business ties with their Finnish counterparts.
