A man from Atyrau had been sentenced to five years in prison for participating in the armed conflict in Ukraine, reports a correspondent for Orda.kz.
The court found that at the end of March last year, the Atyrau resident arrived in Moscow and voluntarily signed a contract with the Russian military.
After brief training and receiving a uniform, he was sent to the Donetsk region as part of a tank regiment, where he served as a military medic. However, under Kazakh law, the very fact of being in a combat zone as a participant in the conflict is considered a crime.
In December, while on the front lines, the man was wounded by shrapnel from an explosive device and taken to a military hospital. He later returned to Atyrau, where he was detained.
The state prosecutor requested six years of imprisonment. The defendant admitted his guilt in full, expressed remorse, and asked the court for a non-custodial sentence, citing the presence of a young child.
The law provides for a penalty of five to nine years in prison. Taking into account the presence of a child and his sincere remorse, the court sentenced him to five years in prison.
